VIENNA CENTRAL STATION
The Central Station, which opened in autumn 2014, brings about many changes, and not just for rail passengers. The central station project, headed by the ARGE Wiener Team (Werner Consult - ISP - STOIK - TECTON - PISTECKY) together with the architects Hotz/Hoffmann-Wimmer is only a part of the 109-hectare site located directly next to the baroque castle of Belvedere and just 1.5 km south of Vienna city centre. As a result of the urban architectural concept envisaged by ARGE Hotz/Hoffmann–Wimmer, this area of the city has adopted many new faces, including a smart office quarter providing up to 20,000 workplaces and the "Sonnwendviertel" residential area with around 5,000 apartments. Much of this area is still a construction site, but there is plenty new to see: the 20er Haus (a listed building designed by Karl Schwanzer in 1962) has been extensively renovated to the plans of Adolf Krischanitz and reopened as the 21er Haus – a museum for contemporary art, the new headquarters of the "Erste Bank", designed by architects henke und schreieck with offices for 4,000 employees, which celebrated topping out in 2014, as well as an innovative education campus designed by PPAG architects for children aged between 0 and 14.
Around 1,250 new apartments are already occupied, offering inhabitants affordable rates as well as attractive open spaces and a wide variety of amenities including a roof garden and swimming pool. As a result of construction company competitions, a Viennese anomaly, 7 teams of building architects and landscape architects have worked together here with the developers to provide high quality aesthetics and varied typology.
Among the beneficiaries of the new park that has been built here (Hager Landscape Design) are the inhabitants of the whole Favoriten neighbourhood, one of Vienna's largest blue-collar quarters with its high density of council flat blocks and social services apartments.
Overall, the area displays the myriad facets and contrasts of Vienna, from traditional yet dynamic, to cosmopolitan yet stubborn.
